Kunst Kan… is the project space of the What Art Can Do Foundation, a platform that focuses on intercultural cooperation and cross-cultural dialogue. The foundation was established in 2018 by Simone Swildens.
Kunst Kan… is a stepping stone for artists and an easily accessible community for art buyers and visual art enthusiasts.
Simone Swildens, together with Paul Wiegman and Geraldine MacDonald, organises and curates monthly exhibitions from the heart of the Jordaan, with national and international artists who are not yet affiliated with a gallery, or who don’t wish to be tied to a gallery.
Kunst Kan… is open to experiment, and has an international and diverse orientation.

Abacus
Bij bovenstaande omzwervingen is het niet gebleven. Anderhalf jaar lang heeft Chahal, ondersteunt met beurzen van het AFK (Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst) en de Stichting Stokroos, gewerkt aan een fantastisch project tijdens een verblijf bij CEAC (Chinese European Art Centre) in Xiamen in China.
Dit project, getiteld Abacus (Telraam) omvat installaties uit porseleinen eivormige bollen, tekeningen, beelden en een video installatie. Tijdens de Lockdown zijn hier nog eens honderdtwintig tekeningen op stof aan toegevoegd.
Met de installatie, die bij Kunst Kan… deels getoond wordt, onderzoekt Chahal rekenkundige systemen en de rol hiervan in verschillende culturen. Een onderzoek waarin het telraam centraal staat. Hoe het een symbool van communicatie kan worden wanneer men onbekend is met de cultuur en de taal van een plek. Een telraam, geïnterpreteerd door een kunstenaar die zichzelf definieert in constante verplaatsing; Abacus, Variations on a Theme.
